Origin Water Co. — water filtration for a healthier home
An Origin Water Co. whole-home softening and filtration system with its brine tank
All of Rhode IslandRhode Island & southeastern Mass

Better water,
whatever you’re starting with.

Across every town in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts you might be on soft reservoir water, on town groundwater that carries real hardness, or on your own well. Each one calls for something different — a whole-home softener, filtration for iron and chlorine, reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap, or all three working together. We build every one of them. One call and we will tell you which is yours, and what it costs.

What’s actually in your water?

Put in your ZIP and we’ll tell you who supplies your water, where it comes from, and which system fits that supply — before anyone calls you.

Why this matters

You already know something’s off with your water

Most people don’t call us because they read a water quality report. They call because of one of these four things.

It tastes and smells of chlorine

Every public supply is disinfected, as it has to be. You taste it in coffee, in ice, in a glass of water from the kitchen tap. A carbon filter takes it out, and it is the change people notice within a day.

You're buying bottled water

Crates of it, every week, for a house that already has water plumbed into it. Reverse osmosis at the kitchen sink ends that — better water than the bottles, from your own tap.

Your pipes add things on the way

Rhode Island's water leaves the reservoir clean and then travels through a lot of old main and older service lines. Providence Water doses for corrosion control and is replacing lead lines through 2033. Filtration at the tap you drink from is the part you control.

On a well? Hardness, iron, and smell

Scale on the kettle, orange staining, soap that won't rinse, sometimes a rotten-egg smell. Half of Rhode Island lives with this. A whole-home system fixes all of it at once.

Our systems

Built for the water you actually have

City water and well water are different problems. A 2,000 sq ft home and a 5,000 sq ft home are different problems. We size the system to your house, not to a price list.

Origin Water Co. single-tank whole-home softener and carbon filter, with its brine tank alongside

Whole-Home Softening + Filtration

One tank, layered. Softening and carbon filtration in the same vessel.

A single tank carrying layered media — granular activated coconut shell carbon on top, high-capacity softening resin beneath it, and a polishing gravel bed at the base — with its own brine tank alongside. It is plumbed in where the water enters the house, so every tap, shower and appliance is downstream of it. The resin takes out the hardness that scales your kettle, spots your glassware and stops soap rinsing. The carbon layer takes out the chlorine taste and smell. One vessel, both jobs, and a smaller footprint than a two-tank build.

Best for: Any home with hardness in the water — wells, and towns on groundwater supply

Origin Water Co. two-tank system — a dedicated softening tank and a dedicated carbon tank, with brine tank

Dual Tank System

Two tanks. Hardness in one, chlorine and taste in the other.

The bigger city-water build: a dedicated softening tank and a dedicated carbon filtration tank, plumbed in one after the other at the point of entry. Treating in stages does each job properly rather than asking one bed of media to do everything, which means more capacity, longer media life and better performance on a busy house. Both tanks backflush themselves to keep the system working for longer.

Best for: Larger homes, and anyone who wants each job handled in its own vessel

Origin Water Co. whole-home carbon filtration tank — carbon over polishing gravel, no brine tank

Whole-Home Carbon Filtration

For soft water that still tastes of the pipe it came through.

Most of Rhode Island and the MWRA belt already arrives soft, so there is no hardness for a softener to remove — but there is still chlorine, and still everything the water picks up crossing a hundred years of main on the way to your kitchen. This is a single tank of granular activated coconut shell carbon over a polishing gravel bed, plumbed in at the point of entry. No salt, no brine tank, no drain line and nothing to refill. Every tap, shower and appliance in the house runs through it.

Best for: Homes on Providence Water, the MWRA and any soft municipal supply

How it works

Four steps, and the first two are free

We’d rather tell you that you don’t need a system than sell you the wrong one. That’s a strange thing for a salesman to say, and it’s the whole idea behind this company.

  1. 1

We talk through your water first

A short call, free, where we work out what you are actually dealing with — not a presentation in your kitchen.

  2. 2

We tell you what it means

Hardness, chlorine, iron, whatever's there. In plain terms, with what it's doing to your plumbing and skin, and what happens if you do nothing.

  3. 3

    We size the right system

Based on your water, your household size and where the equipment can go. Not on what we'd most like to sell.

  4. 4

    We install it

Usually a half day, and we clean up after ourselves. You know the full price before we start — there is no number on install day that wasn’t on the quote.

Our story

“I want you to notice the difference.”

Water is the one thing in a house that touches everything — the shower your kids stand in, the glass on the nightstand, the coffee, the ice, the laundry against your skin all day. Almost nobody thinks about it, because it never asks to be thought about.

I started Origin because too many people around here get sold a system before anyone has looked at their water. Out on a well, or in a town pumping its water out of the ground, a softener and a whole-home filter change everything: no more scale, no more orange staining, soap that finally rinses. On the mains it is a different job — the water arrives soft off a protected reservoir, so the difference is at the tap you drink from, filtration and reverse osmosis, and people notice that one inside a day. Both are worth having.

So I test first, at your own sink, and you watch the result. Then I build the system your house actually calls for — and I build all of them. That is the whole company.

Where we work

All five counties, and we know whose water is whose

Providence, Kent, Washington, Newport and Bristol — the Rhode Island towns and the towns around them. Four different utilities supply this area, and they do not all treat water the same way, so the first thing we tell you is which one you are actually on.

The things people ask us

Anything we haven’t covered, just call. We don’t use a phone tree.

How do I know which system I need?

It comes down to where your water starts. On Providence Water or the MWRA you are on protected reservoir water, and the win is carbon filtration and reverse osmosis at the tap you drink from — chlorine gone, and everything the water picks up crossing a hundred years of pipe. On town groundwater or your own well you have real hardness and usually iron, and that is a whole-home softener and filtration job that changes every fixture in the house. Plenty of homes want both. Tell us what you are seeing and we will tell you which of the two you are, on the call.

Do you install water softeners?

Yes, and they are a core part of what we do. Hardness comes from groundwater, and a great many homes across our area are on it — North and South Kingstown, Narragansett, Westerly, every town on Cape Cod, and every private well in the region. If your water is hard, a softener is the single biggest change you can make to the house: no more scale in the kettle and on the shower door, no spotting on glassware, and soap that finally rinses. What we will not do is size one before we have seen your numbers.

What if I'm on a well?

Then you want the full whole-home system and you probably want it sooner than you think. Groundwater carries whatever rock it sits in, which in New England means hardness and iron, sometimes a sulfur smell that has to be oxidised out before anything else touches it, and the arsenic, uranium and radon the state asks well owners to test for. Softening, filtration and usually UV, working together.

Which am I?

Put your ZIP into the tool at the top of this page — it names your supplier and where your water comes from, across every town in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. It will also tell you which system fits that supply. Then call us and we will confirm it for your house and give you a price.

Where do you actually go?

All of Rhode Island, and southeastern Massachusetts from the South Shore through Bristol and Plymouth counties down to the Cape. Boston, Worcester and the MetroWest towns too. If your town is on our service areas page, we come to you.

What does it cost?

It depends on which of the two you are and what your house needs, which is why we do not put one number on a website and then change it in your kitchen. We give you the number on the call, show you the result standing there, and give you one price before you decide anything.
