Origin Water Co. — water filtration for a healthier home

Who actually supplies your water in Rhode Island and southeastern Mass?

Between Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts there are far more water suppliers than most people expect, and they do not all send out the same water. Here is roughly who is who.

Providence Water

The largest in Rhode Island by a distance — around 600,000 people across more than a dozen communities, drawing on the Scituate Reservoir. Direct retail customers are in Providence, North Providence, Cranston, Johnston and Smithfield; many other systems buy wholesale from it. Soft water, low alkalinity, chlorinated, and dosed with orthophosphate since 2021 for corrosion control.

The MWRA

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority supplies Boston, Brookline, Newton, Quincy, Milton, Norwood, Stoughton, Framingham, Natick, Weymouth, Needham, Wellesley, Canton, Dedham, Southborough and Northborough from the Quabbin and Wachusett reservoirs. Also soft, and the same story: good water leaving the plant, and a long journey to your tap.

Newport Water

Aquidneck Island runs on its own reservoirs rather than the Scituate system. Newport Water serves Newport and Middletown directly and part of Portsmouth, with wholesale supply to the Portsmouth Water & Fire District.

Kent County and Bristol County

The Kent County Water Authority covers Warwick, West Warwick, Coventry and East Greenwich. The Bristol County Water Authority covers Barrington, Bristol and Warren.

The cities that run their own

Pawtucket, Woonsocket, East Providence, Cumberland and Lincoln in Rhode Island. In Massachusetts, Fall River, New Bedford, Taunton, Brockton, Attleboro and Worcester each operate their own supply, as do most of the South Shore and Blackstone valley towns.

South County and Cape Cod: groundwater

North Kingstown, South Kingstown, Narragansett and Westerly pump town groundwater rather than reservoir water. So does every town on Cape Cod — Barnstable, Bourne, Falmouth, Mashpee and Sandwich all draw from the sole-source aquifer beneath the Cape.

Groundwater behaves differently from a protected surface supply: it has been sitting in rock, and it carries what that rock gives up. This is where hardness and iron are genuinely in play, and where a whole-home system earns its place.

And the private wells

Plenty of homes beyond the mains — the western edge of Coventry, parts of Tiverton, Cumberland, Portsmouth and South Kingstown — are on their own bedrock well. If that is you, none of the above applies and the recommendation is a different one entirely.
